Researchers with Navy's Marine Species Monitoring program are among the very few in the world permitted to deploy satellite telemetry tags on critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. These tags, along with a variety of other suction cup attachment type tags, provide crucial information about the behavior of priority species. This new publication integrates data from multiple sources to develop a vessel strike risk model to help inform management actions intended to protect NARW and support recovery of the species. Data from the Navy's Marine Species Monitoring program fills an important gap in the historically under-studied mid-Atlantic region, as we are now learning it's much more than simply a migratory corridor.
